Largest Bosnian mass grave uncovered

ZVORNIK, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Forensic experts in Bosnia said they recovered the remains of more than 600 people from the country's biggest known mass grave.

Investigators spent two months exhuming bodies from the Crni Vrh site in eastern Bosnia, close to the town of Zvornik.

Most of the victims are thought to be Muslim civilians killed by Bosnian Serb forces during the early stages of the 1992-95 war, the BBC said.

The remains will be taken to the northern town of Tuzla for DNA analysis to establish their identities.

Officials from the Bosnian Muslim Commission for Missing People said they had unearthed 481 complete and 148 partial skeletons, some of them belonging to women and children.

Officials said the bodies were buried in other locations but were collected and reburied in the mass grave in order to conceal the killings.

More than 200,000 people were killed during the three-and-a-half years of conflict, most of them civilians.

To date, at least 17,000 bodies have been recovered from more than 300 mass graves in Bosnia.
